About Us
History
Network of Eritrean Women-UK (NEW-UK) is the only specialist organization in the UK supporting the needs of Eritrean women.
NEW-UK is a women’s non-profit organization set up to support Eritrean women. Our aim is to facilitate the tools for Eritrean women to assert their human rights and pursue personal empowerment, development and social change. We are a holistic organization and provide cultural and linguistic specialist advice, information, advocacy, workshops and wellbeing drop targeted to support Eritrean women.
NEW-UK launched in 2014 following the critical need for a UK-wide support network to mobilize information and resources for Eritrean women, many of whom have fled the brutal dictatorship in Eritrea and forced conscription. We support many Eritrean refugee and asylum-seeking women who have endured a significant amount of trauma and many of whom are suffering in silence.
We provide confidential accessible, empowering and culturally sensitive advocacy and support for Eritrean women. Our services include advice, support, education, training and awareness raising to ensure that all divisions within the Eritrean communities across the UK recognize work together to eradicate harmful tradition against women and girls, gender inequalities and assert Eritrean women’s basic human rights. We also support our clients to access local NHS health services, which otherwise remain out of reach due to a lack of knowledge, language difficulties and cultural barriers. We play a significant role in advocating against Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) in local Eritrean communities and delivering workshops and information in ethnic languages.
Our Vision
Our mission is to promote education, provide tools for growth to empower and inspire Eritrean women in the UK, by the
advancement of education, culture, the protection of health and the relief of poverty, sickness and distress. We will lead the social change in Eritrean communities across the UK, which will see women empowered and with fulfilled lives, free from all forms of discrimination, violence and harmful traditions.
Our work goes beyond service provision; we are building a stronger and more resilient community. We offer a holistic service spanning three main areas:
– Advice and advocacy
– Wellbeing and empowerment
– Campaigning
